Grid congestion hinders economic growth and business park development. Ten years ago, Fountain Fuel’s founders recognized this and developed a strategy accordingly. Our stations not only function as refueling and charging stations, but can also be utilized as energy hubs. This is how we optimize the investment in money, land and capacity. Moreover, we add value to sites or land positions, which cannot be developed now because of insufficient energy.


Grid congestion and energy hub: the buzzwords of 2024.
We like to get concrete, with practical and efficient solutions to acute grid congestion. In doing so, we believe in a mix of techniques. Storage of excess power in batteries and electrolysis (production of hydrogen via electricity), smart deployment of software and shared connections, for example. An energy hub is a decentralized solution and often partnership between users and producers of (renewable) energy. Energy generation, transport, storage, conversion and consumption are coordinated and distributed locally. Thus, residents and businesses, located near each other, make optimal use of available energy, with less dependence on the power grid.
Surplus energy is stored locally. This can be done in batteries or via conversion to hydrogen. In addition, excess heat can be used for heat networks. Oxygen released during electrolysis can be used for industrial processes or sewage treatment, for example. It is precisely the coordination of technologies that makes an energy hub promising, sustainable, cost-effective and profitable.
An energy hub helps reduce grid congestion by storing and efficiently distributing renewable energy locally or regionally. This reduces peak loads on the power grid and enables smart control of supply and demand. Hydrogen can provide a perfect solution for excess energy storage or hydrogen supply – liquid or gaseous.
There are many ways to make hydrogen. Electrolysis is the process of splitting water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen. This requires electricity. Sometimes it makes sense to use excess power grid capacity. Efforts are also being made to produce hydrogen in places where energy from hydroelectric, wind or solar power is cheap and abundant.

To combat climate change, more and more sustainable energy is being produced. Storage and distribution of sustainable energy is crucial. Much can be done with battery-electric, but without hydrogen, the energy transition will come to a standstill. In mobility, hydrogen will play a crucial role.
